CA(SA)’s educational app reaches number one spot on the App store

The Invigilator, an entry-level smartphone app used to monitor online and remote evaluations, was co-founded by CA (SA) Nicholas Riemer and has brought positive impact and influence to new heights. ranking first in app stores.

This groundbreaking innovation has garnered more than 1.5 million evaluations and is the number one lowest educational application in South Africa in 2021 and 2022 to date. The application is used by 20 educational institutions, including the University of South Africa, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Cape Town, to name a few.

Launched in 2020, The Invigilator is a tool that mitigates the risk of unethical behavior during online assessments and exams, using non-invasive artificial intelligence (AI) to prohibit collusion and deception. Unlike international monitoring systems, The Invigilator was specifically designed to address the socioeconomic challenges of an unequal society through an inclusive technology solution.

“The vigilante was created and a price was set so that South African universities and schools could move on to continuous assessment, improving teaching and learning in South Africa. The creation of The Invigilator meant that the students could continue to write exams and assessments remotely while in confinement and can reduce the cost of education in the future because there are no physical restrictions, ”Riemer explains.

The monitor allows students to be monitored via an entry-level smartphone and runs AI algorithms to generate automated reports for teachers in the event that unethical behavior is detected through facial recognition, recording of microphones and GPS mapping.

Developed with the socio-economic challenges of South Africa in mind, the app does not require a constant internet connection, which allows it to work anywhere in the country and therefore allows students to study to get the grade they choose from. from a place that suits them.

“Bringing The Invigilator to its full potential inspires and drives me, and as a team, we won’t rest until we’re one of the largest educational technology companies in the world,” says Riemer.

Nicholas Riemer is also the overall winner of the SAICA 2021 Top 35-under-35 and is proud to make a difference as a young leader.
