The first part to compose a musical masterpiece? Make your own instrument from scratch! In this challenge, you will use graphic tools to create a musical instrument in Swift Playgrounds and offer a performance that will leave your audience overwhelmed (and waiting for an encore)!

The challenge begins

The Swift Playgrounds app includes several Playgrounds books with starting points to help you explore different coding concepts and ideas. For this challenge, we ask you to use the book Sonic Create in the Swift Playgrounds app to create a musical instrument of your own creation. Now, this musical instrument doesn’t have to look or sound like a normal instrument: it could be a pile of glass pianos arranged like piano keys or a rhythm board that plays notes in a constant loop. Sonic Create includes a full set of sounds and instruments, as well as great graphics to create the look and feel of your instrument.

Before you create your own creation, you can use the Sonic Workshop book to learn how to use graphics to play sounds and loops.

If you want to practice some music before venturing into the world of virtual instrument making, we recommend that you first download the Swift Playgrounds Sonic Workshop Challenge Book, where you can explore using graphics to play sounds and loops. . Once you’re familiar with some of the APIs, you can start creating graphical instances to respond to touch or drag events. You can also check out some of the music examples provided in the book Sensor Create (iPad only), such as “Using Light to Play Sound”, “Synesthesia” and “Beat Maker”.

Ready to build your own instrument? Think about how you can make music with just these objects to guide you and the types of sounds you want to create. Consider how the code you type influences objects: their location, their resonance, and the types of music you can make. How can you design your instrument to be intuitive and also to invite people to explore and play? As a developer, the tools you make for yourself or for others can completely change the way other people use and experience the world. (Great when you think about it!)

Once you’ve created something you like, share it with the community in the developer forums.
