Demand for smartphones in China fell more than a third in April from the same month last year, according to new figures shared by the Academy of Information and Communications Technology of China. This comes as Apple prepares for its next update of the iPhone line and expects strong sales in the country.

The WSJ reports that smartphone shipments fell 34% in April and the first four months of the year saw a 30% drop to 86 million units. This comes after Apple recently warned that the current situation of COVID-19 in China could cost up to $ 8 billion this quarter, and many in the country decide not to spend money on luxury items at a time when the country continues to fight the pandemic.

The WSJ reported a potential iPhone 14 buyer who says it will continue to use an iPhone 12 Pro Max, even though it has updated its device annually, because money is scarce.

Consumers said they are tightening the laces on their bag, especially for more expensive products. Zhang Rui, a 43-year-old tech worker in Beijing, said she abandoned her plan to buy a new smartphone this year. Ms. Zhang, who uses the iPhone 12 Pro Max and normally updates her device every two years, said she is not attracted enough to the new models to pay a high price.

“Cash flow is tight for people because of the pandemic. Is there a smartphone model available that is worth my money?” she said.

This could be a sentiment expressed worldwide, with inflation and the geopolitical situation in Europe also playing a role in the demand for smartphones there. While the price of the new iPhone 14, which will be the company’s best iPhone to date, has not yet been confirmed, it is very unlikely to be lower than last year’s iPhone 13. In fact, reports suggest that at least some of the new devices will require a costly camera upgrade with Apple likely to pass that cost on to consumers.

Apple is expected to announce its new line of iPhone 14 in or around September based on previous release dates.
