DICKINSON – As a way to empower young female minds about the benefits of technology, a group of leaders will join forces to host the first Coding Camp for Girls in June. The camp will also feature the Governor’s 6th Annual Summit on Innovative Education.

In collaboration with the Roughrider Area Career and Technology Center, Women Empowering Women will host 14 girls from all of southwest Dakota from June 6-10 at Dickinson Middle School. On June 9, Governor Doug Burgum will visit the girls and then host the Governor’s Summit at the school, which aims to bring together local and national leaders in education to share best practices and interact with educators. administrators, parents and students. The summit will be free and open to the public.

In order to host this first summer technology camp, Women Empowering Women President Ray Ann Kilen noted that they needed to get funding through various state grants for non-traditional education and raise money to reach about $ 19,000.

Each of the girls will go home with a laptop, which will allow them to continue their training. Partly due to the funding raised, each girl registered to attend will be able to do so at no cost.

“Part of the reason we wanted to not charge for admission and leave these girls with their computers in addition to technological upgrades is that we were really sensitive to the disparity of opportunities among the girls who are … a households where they may be financially disadvantaged, ”Kilen said. dit. “… If you come from an economically vulnerable home, you may not be able to attend camp or pay for a computer. And so we just wanted to get rid of all those barriers because we really want to expose girls to (other) careers. Not everyone wants to be a nurse. “

The girls participating in the camp begin their second or first year of high school in the fall and will learn from technology instructor Sandy Bertelsen. From building projects with Playground Circuit and learning introductory basic information, Bertelsen noted that the camp will be practically practical.

“It’s to let them know or make them understand that it’s not just for men,” Bertelsen said.

Due to the shortage of programmers, Bertelsen noted that it is important to involve all interested people and show them what careers are available.

When Women Empowering Women began to gain momentum, Bertelsen was a member and wanted to organize a programming camp for girls.

“We’re trying to support women in all walks of life and we have something really good for older women. We have some things for college students. We have things for everyone, but (with) that young high school student. (i) those girls, I felt like we had to wear them too, “Bertelsen said. dit.

With shifting industries in western North Dakota, Kilen noted that technology knowledge is so important. Kilen said he hopes the camp will also stimulate curriculum growth within school systems in southwestern North Dakota.

“Young women in western North Dakota who are interested in technology who don’t want to leave the area, there is work here. They can grow up in these,” Kilen said. “Before (you were) teaching, you are a nurse or you are a secretary because that’s how things were. Now, you can be a biologist, you can be a chemist, you can be a coder … The concept of introducing girls to alternative job opportunities, for me, is huge ”.
