Karnataka has to wait a little longer for its cybersecurity policy, as the government has decided to expand its scope by also touching on the issues addressed by the e-government and home affairs departments.

The proposed policy will promote startups working on technologies to strengthen cybersecurity and prevent financial fraud with the use of smartphones, CN / BT CN Minister Ashwath Narayan told ET. “We hope to complete the exercise in about two or three months,” he added.

The IT / BT department had prepared, in accordance with its previous announcements and a budget promise, a draft with the help of the Center of Excellence-Cybersecurity (CySec) of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc ). When presented before a recent cabinet meeting for discussion, it was suggested that the IT / BT department also include the domestic and e-government departments in the exercise and obtain their input.

EV Ramana Reddy, additional chief secretary of the IT / BT department, told ET: “We have already had a round of meetings with the domestic and e-government departments, and we will meet again soon. We look forward to finalizing the draft. in the coming months “.

The IT / BT department had been working for about a year and held many stakeholder consultations, including meetings with Amazon, VMware and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) to draft the policy paper.

Karnataka’s IT / BT department has always focused on aspects such as creating an innovative ecosystem in cutting-edge technologies and emerging sectors, industry-academia partnerships, strengthening the home ecosystem, capacity building and awareness campaigns.

The e-government department has dealt with citizen-oriented government services, such as the online transfer of various grants to beneficiaries, the management of backend processes such as e-office, and the increase in the digitization of governance. It is also responsible for ensuring government systems and processes.

The housing department is managing aspects related to cybercrime and awareness campaigns to prevent it.

Cybersecurity has become increasingly important for governments and businesses after the Covid-19 pandemic caused people to become widely involved in digital transactions.

In April this year, an IBM delegation led by its South Asian CEO Sandeep Patil met with Minister Ashwath Narayan who offered to share knowledge with the state government on cybersecurity. and artificial intelligence. The US technology giant recently opened a security command center in Bangalore to enhance cyber resilience and industry capacity development.
