Enable Family Sharing for your subscriptions – Discover
Family Sharing helps people share access to automatically eligible renewable subscriptions with up to five iCloud family members on their Apple devices. You can enable family sharing for your subscriptions to grow your subscription business, encourage paid subscriptions, and improve subscriber retention. Learn how to set up family sharing for your subscriptions, and learn about some of the benefits of enabling this feature.
How to enable family sharing for your subscriptions
You can enable family sharing for your App Store Connect subscription. You can enable this feature by subscribing and accepting new or existing subscriptions. Please note that once you’ve enabled family sharing for a subscription, you won’t be able to disable this feature.
- Go to App Store Connect.
- From the My Apps section, select your application.
- Select Purchases from the app and choose the Manage option.
- Select the automatically renewable subscription for which you want to enable family sharing.
- Click or tap “Turn on.”
To verify your purchase and provide access to subscribers and their families, be sure to validate your purchase. If you choose to offer family sharing as a higher level of service, be sure to rate this subscription at the same level as the individual subscription in the App Store Connect so that customers can upgrade if they wish.

Explore the default sharing behavior
Whether a Family Sharing-enabled subscription is automatically shared with a buyer’s family depends on the sharing settings of your subscription and whether the subscription was purchased before or after you enabled family sharing.
By default, customers are enabled to share new eligible subscriptions with their family and can go to the Manage Subscriptions page in your App Store account or Apple ID settings to turn off any moment. To ensure user privacy, existing subscriptions purchased before family sharing is enabled are not shared by default.
Subscribers who do not share their subscription by default will receive a push notification from Apple that their subscription can be shared with Family Sharing members. This notification links to the Manage Subscriptions page, where subscribers can choose to share the subscription with their family group.
Highlight family sharing subscriptions in your app
To help people make the selection that best suits their needs, there are several different ways to promote Family Sharing in your app.
Promotes pre-purchase for family sharing. When creating a registration screen for your subscription, we recommend that family sharing be an included benefit. If you offer multiple subscription options, including a higher price option that includes family sharing, keep this in mind on your sign-up screen along with the incremental cost increase, so that customers can distinguish their options. .
Highlight the feature for existing subscribers. As a reminder, even if a subscription supports family sharing, it might not be shared by default depending on someone’s subscription sharing settings and whether they purchased the subscription before family sharing is enabled in the App Store Connect. You can remind subscribers of this feature, for example, as part of the incorporation for new buyers or for existing subscribers with a message within the app, to help raise awareness and encourage sharing. Consider including instructions on how to make sure you have family sharing enabled for your subscription.
Offer family sharing as an update. You can show messages from the app to existing individual subscribers to let them know that a Family Sharing subscription is available and encourage them to upgrade. This can help customers upgrade their subscription without leaving the app. Make sure you’ve ranked updated subscriptions within the same subscription level in the App Store Connect to provide an easy way to upgrade.
You can also indicate that family sharing is available by including it in the subscription display name. This way, users can easily distinguish whether a subscription offers this feature when viewing their subscription options and managing their subscription.
Raise awareness with family members. You can provide personalized messaging to your application depending on who purchased the subscription. Use
ownershipType to identify whether you are providing information to the buyer or another family member. For example, during incorporation, you can ask the buyer to verify their Family Sharing settings and provide them with opportunities to share the app using a sharing extension.
