Enzen has launched a new cybersecurity methodology and framework for UK energy and utilities companies as concerns about piracy and cyberattacks grow.

After that, actions can be taken to strengthen security as well as digital and data maturity, helping the company continue to accelerate digital progress without increasing risk.

“Critical national infrastructure systems in the UK are evolving from tailor-made isolated agreements to those that use general-purpose computer hosts, IoT sensors, state-of-the-art computing, wireless networking and artificial intelligence,” he said. In February, IBM Security produced a survey that showed that the UK energy sector was the target of 24% of all cybersecurity incidents in the country in 2021.

There have already been a number of notable cyberattacks in the energy sector, including the REvil group that launched a ransomware attack on Elexon in 2020, with attackers gaining access to the company’s internal computer systems on 14 May. Documents obtained during the attack were published online a month later.

People’s energy provider, now closed, was the target of a cyberattack in December 2020, and the npower provider’s application was hacked in February 2021.

Internationally, there have been a number of cyberattacks, such as the European energy giant Energias de Portugal (EDP) which was hit by a ransomware attack in April 2020.

Enzen said the threat of cyberattacks continues to grow, exacerbated by factors such as the energy crisis and anxiety about threats from the Russian state in light of the ongoing conflict.

“Even something as innocuous as a home smart meter should be considered with security in mind. We’ve seen the disruption that can occur when critical infrastructure is targeted, and with northern energy companies. “The United States must do the same to safeguard its basic services,” O’Sullivan said.
