From Hybrid to Blended Learning: Using Tech to Improve Students’ Experience


Hybrid learning versus blended learning

In response to the pandemic, many schools have operated under a hybrid model. Hybrid learning should not be confused with blended learning, although both depend on the use of educational technology to function efficiently.

Prior to the pandemic, hybrid learning rarely existed in K-12 schools. It was a model used mostly in college classes, and even there it was scarce. Hybrid learning refers to where students are sitting. In a hybrid model, there are some students in the classroom and some students at home. This can work in a number of ways: students attending school on alternate days, synchronous learning in the classroom and at home, and more, but at its core is a model that defines where students are.

Blended learning, on the other hand, is about the activities that students do as part of their learning. It is about educators incorporating educational technology into their activities and lesson plans.

Blended learning drives the future of K-12 education

The rise of educational technology has driven blended learning, making it an integral component in many classrooms. Technology is now present in all subjects, beyond traditional STEM instruction.

There are many benefits to keeping technology in the classroom, even though hybrid learning is starting to decline this year. The use of educational technology increases engagement while creating more opportunities for students to take advantage of their strengths and achieve success with digital tools.

Significant daily use of technology in their classes also prepares students for success in the future. It gives them the skills they will probably need for college and professional success and can even open them up to new career paths related to technology.

Advances in certain technologies also opened the door to greater collaboration and creativity in the classroom. Students can work together using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, even if they are not in the same space. Many cloud-based software programs also offer students the option to work together in a way they previously could not.

Blended learning is the future of these educational technological advances. The pandemic did not create this style of learning, but it pushed most schools, teachers, and students further ahead of where they were.
