How to Understand the Problems Facing EdTech


educational technology (EdTech). Because of this, there have been massive advances in EdTech. However, despite these advances, there are still several issues facing EdTech today as we know it. My goal with this blog is to help you understand these issues.

1. Lack of professional development

Too many teachers are not technologically competent. Many of those who do have technology skills do not know how to apply these skills in the classroom and do not receive much help in this area.

When teachers receive training in EdTech, they typically receive training on how to work with technology. “Here’s the power button.” “This is how to project the illustration on the board.” “This is how you turn off your device”.

What teachers need is pedagogical training using this educational technology. Without this proper training, teachers are entering the classroom (either online or traditional) without knowing how to apply EdTech to the classroom.

2. Many Resist Technology

Many teachers are reluctant to deviate from the status quo. The use of technology in education is simply not what they are used to. It’s different. It’s a change. People are afraid of change. They are very scared to make a leap. Therefore, they resist EdTech.

Sometimes it is not the teachers who resist the change. Sometimes it’s the direction of the school. They consider that “experimenting with technology” is beyond the scope of their work. After all, they were hired to run the school, not to implement the new technology.

3. Not involving students in informal learning

Some distance learning models are configured to be rigid models of conferences and tests. These models do not get students to experiment in or out of the classroom and therefore participate in informal learning. Other classroom models, such as the inverted classroom, allow the teacher to combine formal and informal learning. When combined, students tend to learn better and retain more.

4. Do not personalize learning

Teachers see the need to personalize learning. They have been taught this need and they see it in their classroom. However, the tools they need to deliver this much-needed personalized learning simply do not exist with the ability they need.

There is also the fact that teachers do not have the vision of students ’skills when they are teaching remotely which they do when they are teaching in a traditional classroom. When taught in a traditional classroom, teachers can read students ’directions.

Do you feel comfortable with the topic? Do they fully understand the concept? Teachers can explain this in a traditional classroom. However, an online classroom does not offer this view.

5. Many do not offer effective formative assessments

While EdTech allows teachers to evaluate their students in a number of different ways, these assessments may not be as appropriate. I say this because teachers cannot know what the student is doing during the assessment. Is there adequate adult supervision? You just can’t know.

Conclusion

There are other issues that EdTech faces, but these are the main ones that we need to understand. And we can’t beat them if we don’t know what they are.

Education today is a world of constant growth and change. EdTech seems to be the answer to much of the educational need. We need to work to understand these issues so that we can work to solve them one by one in our school districts and in our classrooms.
