Meet the new Apple Developer forums – Discover

Whether you’re chatting with the community, asking questions, or getting clarification from Apple engineers, Apple’s developer forums are a great place to learn and share information about Apple’s platforms.

The forums have a lot of great content and we want to help you get the most out of your visit. Check out some tips and tricks to find out how you can post as a professional, improve your reputation, quickly find the best answers, and more.

Customize your profile

Although anyone can view and browse the forums, you’ll need to sign in with your Apple ID if you want to ask or answer questions. Once registered, you can customize your profile with a preset avatar, add your location if you feel comfortable doing so, and share a link to one of your apps in the App Store.

Just follow a few simple steps:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Navigate to your profile silhouette in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Click or tap your silhouette.
  4. Click or tap Edit profile.

From here, you can change what you want to change, as well as choose to display information such as the time you spend in the forums.

Etiquette, it’s you

Forums are organized by tags: When someone asks a new question, they can add up to four tags to help categorize their post. If you have any questions about creating watchOS applications with SwiftUI, for example, you can tag this post SwiftUI i watchOSand people who search for any topic would get it in the search results.

Tags are displayed in each forum post: you can view all the most recent questions submitted under a particular tag by clicking or tapping on it, as well as view any technical documentation or information relevant to that tag.

View all available tags in the forums

Search quickly

Available on all forum pages, the search bar allows you to search for questions, tags, and profiles. You can increase your search queries with a few quick tips; here’s how.

Search for keywords
Type a word that is three characters or more and press Enter to get question titles or descriptions related to the word (or words) you typed.

Tag search
Do you want to search for a tag? Write it in parentheses like this:

[mac]

This query will return information about tags with the word “mac”. Type the name of a specific tag and go directly to the landing page of the tag, which contains a brief description of the tag and a list of recently tagged questions.

Combined searches
If you know the name of a specific tag or multiple tags, you can combine them with a keyword to further refine your search. For example:

[macOS][Beta] Catalyst

This search will return all questions that have “Catalyst” in the title or description and are tagged with “macOS” and “Beta”.

Find a person
Want to take a look at someone’s profile? Use the following:

user:username

Replace “username” with the username of the person you’re looking for to get a list of matching people (or, if you entered an exact match, you’ll visit that person’s profile).

Quickly find Apple’s recommended answers

When browsing forum threads, you can use colors and shapes to quickly learn a little more about this post. If you use a mouse or trackpad, you can also hover over any box to learn more about this post.

Each question shows a color-coded square to indicate status.  Blue squares are unresolved issues, green squares are solved, and questions with green edges are solved with an answer recommended by Apple.

All unresolved questions appear with a blue box to the left of the thread title, with the number of replies within that box.

Once a question has been marked as “resolved”, this box turns green. And if an Apple Developer Forum administrator has flagged this “Apple recommended” response, the post’s green box gets a darker edge around it.


Tip: Be a troubleshooter

Our community has a great knowledge of both platforms and Apple products. If you find a question in the forums that you think you can answer, you can answer this post with your suggested solution. With the help of the author of the post, you can mark your answer as the solution to your problem and earn reputation points for the best answer. If an Apple staff member agrees, they can promote your response to Apple Recommended, giving you even more reputation.


When viewing threads, you can find answers marked as recommended by Apple on the left side of the screen: they are represented by a black circular icon with a white Apple logo inside.

It represents your reputation

Excellent community members are key to a great experience, and at Apple Developer Forums, you can help your community get out of important questions and gain a reputation by engaging in constructive engagement. Moderators can review forum posts to ensure a safe and secure platform for you and other developers. However, once a post is approved, the community can classify and promote posts on the cover or top of a tag.

Forums use a point-based system: participating in threads and providing answers in a constructive way can help you gain points and privileges.

Here are some of the benefits you can gain from actively participating in forums:

  • When you resolve issues, you will get a “fixed” badge on your profile indicating the number of questions you have resolved.
  • When you provide a solution that administrators mark as “Apple Recommended”, you receive a “Recommended Apple” badge on your profile.
  • You can report duplicate or junk posts. (Requires at least 50 reputation points)
  • You can vote against the questions or answers. (Requires at least 100 reputation points)

Earn points with:

  • Provide an answer that is marked “Apple recommended”: 25 points
  • Provide a response that is marked “Resolved” by the author: 15 points
  • Ask a question that is voted positively: 5 points
  • Provide a positive answer: 5 points

Lose points for:

  • Revoke a favorable vote for your question or answer: -5 points (neutralize the previous favorable vote)
  • Provide a question or answer that is voted down: -2 points
  • The spam or inappropriate / abusive content you posted has been removed: -15

Share your answers in a post

Would you like to link to a forum thread in Posts, Email, or anywhere else? You can share the original post or any reply if you go to a thread and tap or click the Share button, which is online to the right of the post.

Publish as a professional

Are you ready to ask a question or share your thoughts? Here’s how to make your post look great.

Content is crucial
When posting a question, consider what background you can provide to help people understand your problem. Try to mention any limitations, hypotheses or simplifications. If you forget something or make a spelling mistake, you can edit your content up to 15 minutes after posting.

Label it
You can add up to four tags to any post. Choose tags that are directly related to your question, and consider whether you want to see your post listed on that tag if someone else did.

Mark it
Forums take advantage of the Markdown language to design text quickly and easily without complicated formats, such as:

  • Headers
  • Sorted lists, tasks, and unordered lists
  • Bold and italic text
  • Links
  • Code highlighting and syntax
  • Blog quotes, code quotes and text quotes

Attach a record
If your post will benefit from attaching log content, click or tap the attachment icon in the text editor. Add a title, paste the contents of the log, and click Add Text. This text will be linked to the body of your post. (Note: Image attachments are not currently supported.)

Mark as resolved
If someone offers you a great answer on the thread, be sure to mark your question as solved by clicking or tapping the check mark icon next to the answer in question. You can only mark an answer as resolved and cannot be unchecked. (You can’t solve your own question either.)

Excitement of the event

At WWDC20, forums offer a variety of event-specific tags to explore.

Everyone can view and read all WWDC tagged posts. When you sign in with your Apple ID, you can also share your thoughts with WWDC20 community tag or request help on conference logistics with the WWDC20 support Tag.

In addition, if you have been a member of the Apple Developer Program or the Apple Developer Enterprise Program since June 11, 2020, or have won the Swift Student Challenge, you can post to session-specific conference tags by logging in with the Apple ID associated with your developer account. Use these tags to ask questions about technology in a given session and connect directly with Apple’s engineering teams.
