BELMONT, California (KRON) – Using a virtual reality simulator, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated to KRON4 a scenario in which an active shooter was inside a courthouse in training facilities of the sheriff in Belmont. Sheriff Carlos Bolanos spoke about what he intends to achieve by making deputies pass this training based on virtual reality.

“I think it’s a realistic training that will provide my deputies with the ability to effectively and immediately neutralize and neutralize any threat that endangers public safety,” he said.

The software is made by a company called Virtra, and simulates both violent and non-violent situations

“In addition to dealing with people suffering from a mental health crisis, there are scenarios that teach escalation,” Bolanos said.

KRON4 asked Bolanos if there was training available to make sure MPs act according to the training they receive when they encounter an active shooter.

“Yes,” Bolanos confirmed. “From Columbine, law enforcement changed their tactics. We waited, staged, and waited for the tactical teams to come in. But after Columbine, all that training changed to immediately partner with the first enforcement agent. of the available law that comes to the site and enters and addresses this threat. “

Over the next few months, each of the 400 San Mateo County MPs will undergo their first round of simulator training. Bolanos said the training will continue annually, with deputies doing it at least three times a year.
