New York CIO has summer plans for state’s new cybersecurity center

The cybersecurity operations center that state and New York City officials opened earlier this year in Brooklyn will spend the next few months perfecting its practices and standards so that it can meet the goal of state CIO Angelo “Tony” Riddick to turn it into an industry-leading operation, Riddick. he recently told StateScoop.

“One of the key things we’re going to do this summer is to develop and refine processes, so it’s not just a one-time operation, it’s setting the standard in the United States,” Riddick said in an interview earlier this year. but at the half-yearly conference of the National Association of Heads of State Information.

The Joint Security Operations Center opened in February with much promotion from Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams. And while it’s not the only cybersecurity company in the country that brings together state and local resources, Riddick said the New York approach gives it an edge.

“That’s our advantage,” he said. “We will work with those government agencies to share with them the data we have and take the lessons learned and look at the patterns they provide so that we can use that data properly and make our cyber approach widespread everywhere.”

With the Brooklyn cyber operation completed, Riddick said he can now look at long-term projects as a strategic plan for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services.

“I want to take my technology roadmap,” a five-year planning document that said it includes implementing things like multifactor authentication and artificial intelligence, “and incorporate it into my strategic plan so that we have flesh in that bone and not just a vision of cake in the sky. “
