The Richland Library hopes to increase accessibility to its resources with the addition of Hearing Loops for hearing impaired clients. Following a donation from the Columbia, Northlake and Wade Hampton chapters of the Sertoma ClubLibrary customers will have access to audio frequency induction devices from Summer 2022.

Hearing ties create inclusive spaces for the hearing impaired by direct looping sound into hearing aids (and cochlear implants) with a telematics coil or “T-coil”. The auditory loops create a distortion-free signal reception. Richland Library will offer Hearing Loops at Library of things for billing and personal use for customers and in support of face-to-face programs such as forums, storytelling hours, community conversations, and more.

The donation from Columbia, Northlake and Wade Hampton Sertoma Clubs, whose mission is “Service to All Mankind”, will be assists the Richland Library in its search to allow Richland County residents free access and create a fair library experience for all customers, according to a statement from the library.

This donation also follows the South Carolina Senate Resolution of March 2022 which recognizes May as “Best Hearing and Speaking Month” in South Carolina, advocated by Sertoma clubs in the Midlands area and presented by Senator Shane Massey.

Richland Library customers can start ordering Hearing Loops as a accommodation or by consulting an auditory loop in the Library of Things in the summer of 2022.
