State of Software Development Increased Concerns About Safety, Security & Quality


Perforce Software, a provider of enterprise hardware solutions that require productivity and visibility on a scale within the SDLC, published the results of its annual state-of-the-art survey of automotive software development conducted in collaboration with Automotive IQ. Nearly 600 automotive development professionals around the world responded to current industry practices and emerging trends. Key findings suggest a growing concern for the security of automotive software, while the automotive vehicle market continues to evolve rapidly.

With the continued growth of the autonomous, semi-autonomous, electric and connected vehicle segments, software is even more central to automotive development. The growing amount of software installed in vehicles can lead to more security and safety considerations during the development process. In fact, 76% of automotive developers have adopted or are in the process of adopting a left-wing change strategy to identify software security and safety vulnerabilities as soon as possible.

In addition, the survey found that the three main concerns of car developers are safety (34%, a 9% decrease from last year), safety (27%, a 5% increase over the previous year). last year) and quality (25%, an increase of 4% over last year). Of those most concerned about safety, 46% said their main concerns were the difficulties and time required to meet all the requirements of ISO 26262.

“Security remains the top priority for the automotive software industry, but security concerns continue to grow as the need to protect electronic systems, communications networks and automotive software grows,” he said. say Perforce Vice President of Product Ido Benmoshe. “OEMs and their supply chain partners want to prevent costly and malicious attacks, unauthorized access or tampering with automotive systems, and ensuring that their code is secure is the first step in mitigating these incidents.” .

The development of autonomous, semi-autonomous, electric and connected vehicles is also severely affecting development teams. Most teams are working on autonomous and semi-autonomous components (82%, an increase of 38% over last year), electrical components (87%, an increase of 39% over last year) and connectivity components (83 %, an increase of 34% over last year) to some extent.

Another notable finding was that 86% use a coding standard to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable code, with 46% of respondents using a static code analysis tool to help comply with it, and 31 % uses a SAST tool to ensure secure software.
