Technology tips from OIT

The following information was shared with Ohio University faculty on May 6, 2022.

The Office of Information Technology (ILO) has provided this information so that teachers and staff can return to tools and prepare for the autumn semester. Updates to the following technology tools are designed to help members of the Ohio community feel more comfortable with improvements in educational technology.

Tool updates

Course offer

A new version of Course Offers is now available, with a more modern interface and responsive design adapted for mobile phones. The new version was created by student developers and will be available along with the previous version throughout the summer. Teachers are encouraged to submit comments on the new design.

Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams

Teams is constantly posting new updates and improvements. Be sure to check out the new whiteboard application and classroom knowledge, a tool that allows instructors to easily track the activity of their students’ teams, from homework to participation in conversations. class.

As a reminder, you can easily request the creation of a team for your courses. Blackboard Ultra users can use the tools in your Blackboard course to build a computer. If you’re using Blackboard Original or need a unique combination of sections / courses combined on a single computer, please submit the AutoCreate form.

To keep up to date with the latest enhancements, you can visit What’s New in Microsoft Teams or type “/ whatsnew” in the Teams search bar.


Qualtrics will end its support for Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, along with the withdrawal of Internet Explorer by Microsoft. Qualtrics will be inaccessible from your Internet Explorer browser after that date. The ILO recommends using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to access Qualtrics.


Blackboard updates have been made, and instructors using Turnitin in Blackboard Original will need to rebuild all tasks created before the summer quarter or switch to using the Blackboard Assignment and Peer Assessment features.

Tasks created in Blackboard Ultra will continue to work, but all tasks from Turnitin to Blackboard Original that were copied from a previous quarter must be deleted and re-created to pick up new student submissions.

Top hat

A recent change in the timing of Top Hat and Blackboard courses affects the way teachers connect content. To synchronize Top Hat and Blackboard courses, you must start syncing from Blackboard instead of Top Hat.

See How to combine a Top Hat course with a Blackboard course for a demo. This option is compatible with both Blackboard Ultra Courses and Blackboard Original.


REDCap, an ideal survey tool for collecting longitudinal data, data in community settings, or data for multi-site projects, has been added to the ILO survey tool options. REDCap is a secure web-based survey tool that is available to all Ohio faculty, staff, and students.

Schedule a REDCap workshop to make your surveys as good as possible.

Training and consultation information

Visit the ILO’s Technology Resources and Training website to access online help information and to schedule a workshop or consultation with an ILO professional to browse your software or technology needs at classroom.

Topics include Blackboard Original, Blackboard Ultra, Learning Spaces, Microsoft Teams, Panopto, Qualtrics, VoiceThread, and more.

Learning space resources

Explore the following resources for more information about your classroom for the coming semesters:

  • Technology Finder: Allows you to search for technology available in ILO-compliant teaching spaces.
  • Classroom Help Center: See self-guided help tools for common classroom technology topics.
  • Digital Toolboxes: Learn which technology options are best for your students’ learning goals.
  • Inquiries: Meet with ILO support staff for a hands-on demonstration of learning spaces configured for safe distance learning. These queries also cover the use of the following hardware:
    • Audio (microphones, etc.)
    • Document cameras for sharing handwritten demonstrations and notes
    • Other special equipment
Updates to learning spaces

The classroom spaces in the RTV Communications Building, Tupper Hall, and selected Porter Hall spaces are scheduled for a technology upgrade during the summer and early fall semesters. More information and details about the project, deadlines and affected spaces are available on the Classroom Improvement Initiative website.

Scheduled maintenance

Ellis Hall: Computers located in all ELIS-compliant spaces in Ellis will be replaced during the summer semester.

All ILO-managed computers in Ohio classrooms will be upgraded to the Windows 11 operating system before the start of the fall semester. Faculty members will receive if their classroom is selected for a Windows 11 operating system upgrade, during the first summer session. This update should not affect your browsing experience on your Windows device.

Technology reminders

Learn how to sign up for Azure Multifactor Authentication

Ohio University will move from Duo Mobile to Azure MFA, a new multi-factor authentication tool, next year. Azure MFA offers enhanced security, cost savings, integration with Microsoft products, and a self-service password reset not available with Duo Mobile.

Teachers are invited to register and provide feedback on the experience during the current acceptance phase.

Be accessible!

OHIO is committed to providing students with an accessible user experience. If you are unsure whether your course materials are considered digitally accessible, want information on best practices, or have other questions about digital accessibility, consider joining an office hours session with an expert in accessibility.

These office hours are hosted monthly by the Ohio Digital Accessibility Network (DAN), an interdisciplinary group of university-wide volunteers committed to helping the University of Ohio promote inclusion through digital accessibility.

Update your device

Don’t ignore update reminders! Take the time during the summer to download and install updates to your personal, University-owned devices. Constant updates keep your device safe and running more efficiently.

Internet Explorer Retirement
Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer will be retired on June 15, 2022. If you use Internet Explorer, we recommend switching to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Chrome and Firefox are the recommended browsers for many tools, such as Blackboard and Qualtrics.

Take care of yourself

The Office of Information Security is aware of recent reports of possible cyberattacks against the United States. Please practice greater technology security surveillance. Keep up to date with information security resources for faculty and make sure you are familiar with the latest round of approved security standards.

Understanding VDI

The Ohio Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides remote access to specific Ohio University software through a complete Windows desktop environment from any PC, Mac, iOS, or Android device. This access allows users to connect to select University resources from a personal device.

Once you have VDI installed, you can search for available VDI software applications to preview what is available to unscrupulous Ohio faculty, staff, and students. If you find that you need help connecting to these applications or to determine your eligibility for access, please contact IT Services.

Visit the Technology Help Center ( to find help materials, send a ticket, or connect to the IT Services Service. Visit the Tech Ready site for the most common beginning-of-semester technology topics for teachers and students. If you need help in person, you can drop by Bobcat Depot at the Baker Center Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
