At an IBM Poughkeepsie press conference in New York this week, Dames told reporters that “there’s a lot to worry about” when it comes to the potential threat of quantum attacks.

“We believe there will be a time when quantum computers can break the cryptographic protections we have used for many years,” Dames said.

While there are different schools of thought on how imminent the threat of quantum computing and therefore quantum attacks is, IBM’s quantum roadmap shows that it is expected to reach quantum advantage in the next five years, as the organization plans to offer a system of more than 4000 qubits. for 2025.

If a cybercriminal takes advantage of quantum computing, he or she may be able to derive someone’s encryption key and use it to impersonate, falsify transactions, falsify digital signatures, find and print data, and extort or disclose collected data, he said. Ladies.

While this is not currently possible, it is not just a future issue.

According to Dames, cybercriminals today are stealing data for the purpose of exposing it.

“These kinds of attacks can start now because data is being collected today,” he said.

Ladies said there are two kinds of security issues associated with the ability of quantum to affect cryptography. A quantum computer can halve symmetric key strength and hash algorithms, and can completely break public key cryptographic algorithms, he said.

“In the case of symmetric and hash algorithms, what we need is stronger encryption algorithms that have larger keys or larger summaries. But in the case of public key cryptography, we need new algorithms based on different mathematical problems. “.

The answer to this problem is secure quantum cryptography, which is resistant to attacks even after larger-scale quantum computing is available.

According to Ross Mauri, CEO of IBM Z, the recently available IBM z16 mainframe computer is the industry’s first quantum security system.
