Trellix Finds Workforce Shortage Impacts 85% of Organizations’ Cybersecurity Posture | News

The findings are based on a survey by Vanson Bourne, commissioned by Trellix, of 1,000 cybersecurity professionals in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States in various sectors.

More education is needed. As threats from state actors and cybercriminals grow in volume and sophistication, so does the global shortage of cybersecurity professionals. While some countries such as Russia and China are investing heavily in fostering cybersecurity talent through state-funded education, many nations do not have dedicated programs. Trellix tried to understand the levels of education and found that more than half (56%) believe that qualifications are not necessary for a successful career in cybersecurity. The survey also found:

  • Skills development support (85%) and certification research (80%) were selected as very or extremely important factors for the industry to expand its workforce.
  • Entrepreneurs could be doing more to encourage community mentoring programs with a presence in K-12 schools (94%).
  • Areas most likely to attract people to cybersecurity include efforts to promote the spirit of cybersecurity careers (43%), the encouragement of STEM students who consider cybersecurity careers (41%), and more financial support for to students in professional cybersecurity itineraries (39%).

Diversity generates better results. Of the cybersecurity professionals surveyed, 78% are male, 64% are white, and 89% are heterosexual, and a large majority of respondents (91%) believe that greater efforts are needed to grow the cybersecurity talent group. various groups. The survey found that the vast majority (94%) believe that the role of those working in cybersecurity is greater than ever and a similar number (92%) say that cybersecurity is a job with purpose and spirit that motivates them. . However, cybersecurity professionals are hungry for recognition, and 36% say they feel a lack of recognition for the good done to society.
