Perhaps what I dislike most about Nintendo Switch and Switch’s official OLED docks is that they are a bit fragile due to this plastic front flap and are easy to break in traffic. It’s not something you want to do with such an expensive accessory. So, if you want to take your Switch with you on your trip, it’s best to leave the official dock at home and get a smaller replacement.

Enter the Switch Unitek docking station. I had the opportunity to try this compact dock for a couple of weeks. During this time, it worked very well and proved to be the perfect travel accessory and base replacement, mostly because it offers a LAN port and two USB ports.

Bottom line: With its compact size and ability to play in both table and TV mode, this docking station is a useful accessory for travel or to replace an existing base.

The good

  • Compact and easy to transport
  • Supports desktop and TV mode
  • It includes two USB ports and a LAN port
  • Rubber pads prevent it from slipping
  • Intuitive design

The bad

  • No cables included
  • Just one foot standing position

The Unitek Switch and Switch OLED docking station sells for $ 33.99 on Amazon. However, it can also be found selling for less than that. At the time of this review, Prime members had a 15% discount coupon. Because it offers the LAN port and the additional USB port, this is reasonably priced.

This device is about the size of my palm, and the bracket that holds the switch folds and is positioned to keep it safe during traffic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with its carrying case, but it’s so small that I can easily put it in a backpack, pocket or bag and travel with it.

I was glad to see that it works just as well with the Switch or OLED Switch in both desktop and TV mode. For it to work, I installed the switch on the USB-C port on the dock and then tapped the big black button to toggle between these two modes. When you are in docked mode, the system goes blank and only shows the game on your TV. Meanwhile, tapping the button for table mode again allows the system to load while displaying images on the screen. The base charged my Switch well in table mode and I watched it increase the battery as I played.

You can also use it with Switch Lite. However, because the smaller gaming system does not have the necessary internal hardware for TV mode, you can only use it in table mode.

The bottom of the Unitek Switch docking station has four rubber pads that prevent the device from sliding everywhere. But this dock stands out from the others because it offers a LAN port like the OLED Switch dock. That way, you can get a more stable Internet connection for online gaming instead of Wi-Fi. There are also two USB ports on either side of the unit so you can connect Switch accessories. For example, you can use these ports to charge your phone or other devices if you are traveling.

While I love the simple design of this dock, I was disappointed to see that the stand can only hold my Switch and OLED Switch in one position. It would be better if I had at least a couple of angle options. While I’m talking about this topic, I doubt the support can break on its own, but it could easily break if it’s handled by kids or someone who isn’t paying attention.

On the other hand, this base does not include any cable, which means that consumers will need to supply their power, HDMI and LAN cables. So make sure you have these things on hand if you want to use it as another dock somewhere in your house instead of replacing the one you already have.

Third-party switching docks can be found all over the Internet, but care must be taken, as some are known to have sunk the Switch in the past. Here are a couple of options we recommend.

First of all, Unitek also sells the Alxum Switch docking station, which is very similar to this one but costs a bit less as it does not include a LAN port and has one less USB port. However, it will meet your needs if you do not need these other connections.

If you just want something that allows you to connect to your TV without the need for support, the Genki Covert Dock is a great choice. You will need to supply your own cables.

You should buy this if …

  • You want a portable dock
  • You are looking for something that can load your Switch in desktop mode
  • You often plan online multiplayer and want a LAN connection

You shouldn’t buy this if …

  • You want something with more support angles
  • You do not need a LAN port
  • You’d rather have something that comes with cables

The Unitek Switch and Switch OLED docking station is an excellent accessory for any owner. It is easy to take with you wherever you go and offers this LAN port for a stronger internet connection. Plus, thanks to these two USB ports, you can quickly charge one or two accessories while using it.

However, the stand isn’t the toughest in the world, and it would be better if you could support your Switch at more than one angle while you’re in table mode. You will also need to provide cables, which are not included in the box.
